Betty White to be honored with new USPS stamp

Next year, a new postage stamp honoring the late, cherished “Golden Girls” star Betty White will be released.

On Friday, the USPS revealed that an image of White will be included on one of its 2025 Forever Stamps.

White passed away in 2021, just a few weeks before turning 100. In addition to “Golden Girls,” she was well-known for her parts in “Boston Legal” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”

In an announcement that included a preview of the stamp, the Postal Service referred to White as a “icon of American television” who “shared her wit and warmth with viewers for seven decades.”

“The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans as she entered her 90s, was also revered as a compassionate advocate for animals,” said the article.

On the stamp, White is seen grinning against a purple backdrop in a 2010 photograph by Kwaku Alston. Based on the image, Dale Stephanos produced the digital illustration, according to the Postal Service. The stamp was created by Greg Breeding, a Postal Service art director.

“I’d love to send a letter back to my 18-year-old self with this stamp on it and tell him that everything is going to be OK,” Stephanos posted to Facebook.

Additionally, the Black Heritage series stamp will feature Allen Toussaint, according to the Postal Service. The Postal Service said the collection has honored a woman one year and a man the following. The 48th stamp in the series will be Toussaint’s.

According to the Postal Service, Toussaint was a “virtuoso pianist, singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, and producer responsible for scores of hits across multiple genres.” He passed away in 2015.

According to the Postal Service, the stamp features a 2007 photograph of Toussaint that was taken by Bill Tompkins. Ethel Kessler, the service’s art director, created it.

Additional 2025 stamp offerings include a group of infant wild animals, a Lunar New Year stamp for the year of the snake, and a love-themed stamp with artwork by Keith Haring.

Lisa Bobb-Semple, director of stamp services for the Postal Service, stated, “This early look at our 2025 stamp program demonstrates our commitment to providing a diverse range of subjects and designs for both philatelists and stamp enthusiasts.”
