Christina Applegate reveals she ‘lies in bed screaming’ in pain from MS symptoms

Speaking candidly about the devastating realities of living with multiple sclerosis, Christina Applegate

In 2021, Christina Applegate received a diagnosis of the illness.

The 52-year-old Married… With Children star has been suffering from the chronic illness for a number of years before receiving a diagnosis in 2021.
Although there is presently no treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS), which affects the brain and spinal cord, medicines can help control its symptoms.

Extreme exhaustion, numbness, tingling, muscle aches and spasms, difficulties regulating the bladder, and eyesight and coordination impairments are some of the symptoms.

Christina has been candid about her personal battles with the illness, acknowledging that it leaves her “screaming” in agony while she sleeps.

Speaking on the MesSy podcast, which she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, a Sopranos star who also has multiple sclerosis, Christina disclosed: “I lay in bed screaming.”Jamie and I have different—everyone’s manifestations are distinct. I screamed as I laid in bed. For example, the squeezing, the soreness, and the severe aches.

The celebrity has been candid about how the illness has impacted her.

The two also spoke with Rory Kandel, who has multiple sclerosis and founded Rory’s Bakehouse in California, on the show.

Her symptoms, according to Rory, “manifest in pain” that she likened to “knives in your spine” and that occasionally prevent her from moving around.

Christina’s response to her question about if the hosts ever “feel like that” was, “Every single day of my life.”

She disclosed: “My phone has moved into my hands, and sometimes I can’t even pick it up.

“There are moments when I can’t even hold them when I try to grab my phone or switch on the TV with my remote control. Right now, I can’t open bottles.”

Christina referred to it as “the beauty of invisible diseases” since individuals with MS may appear healthy to others although facing numerous hidden struggles.

“Jamie knows that I just lay in bed all the time,” she continued. I mean, I’m kind of cool with that because I worked for over 50 years.

“But I was like, ‘Yep,’ if I put my feet on the ground and they ache really bad to the touch. I don’t feel like trekking all the way to the darn bathroom, so I’m going to go back in bed and urinate in my diaper.

“I actually don’t lie here and pee in my diaper,” Christina clarified. It’s only a joke. However, it’s really difficult, unpleasant, and embarrassing.

Up until seven years prior to her final diagnosis, she had first observed minor symptoms, as she previously stated on Good Morning America.

In 2021, she made her MS diagnosis public.

“It was really just a tingling sensation on my toes when my symptoms began in early 2021.

And I was being wheeled to the set in a wheelchair by the time we began filming in the summer of that year. I couldn’t walk that far, for example.”

She went on to describe how that resulted in her legs completely collapsing beneath her, which made her think she had the illness years before a medical expert gave her a diagnosis.
“I honestly just kind of dismiss it as the weather, being exhausted, or being dehydrated. Then, for months or so, nothing would happen, and I didn’t pay attention,” she went on.

She said that she’s “used to it now” despite being in “excruciating pain.”

“I’m isolating myself right now. I’m coping with it in a way that involves not going anyplace because I don’t want to. It’s difficult,” she continued.
