Family suffered horrific death after eating leftovers for breakfast together

This is the terrible story of a family who all died horribly and painfully a few hours after consuming the same breakfast.

Meals that are prepared in bulk and frozen are revolutionary. After a demanding workday, you can take advantage of the advantages of a home-cooked meal without having to start from scratch.

But if you don’t take the right precautions when keeping and reheating some foods, this strategy might also result in major health problems.

One Chinese family’s choice to begin their morning by eating Suantangzi, a homemade dish consisting of thick noodles prepared with fermented corn flour, had fatal results.

To commemorate a national holiday, the 12-member family got together and ate the meal early on October 5, 2020.

Only nine of the twelve persons there decided to consume the dish, even though the noodles had been cooked and defrosted after a year in the freezer. Due to the taste, it is thought that the younger family members chose not to eat it.

All of the family members who had consumed the noodles started to feel very ill in the hours that followed, displaying signs of nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort.

Despite receiving treatment at the hospital, they would all pass away in the days that followed from the unexplained disease.

The fermenting soup appeared to be the most likely cause of the deaths, which prompted local officials to look into what had caused three-quarters of the family members present to become ill and die.

The noodles spoiled throughout the freezing and defrosting process, which led to the development of a high concentration of lethal bongkrekic acid. Both the noodles and the stomach fluid that the doctors analyzed had a high level of bongkrekic acid.

How does bongkrekic acid form and what is it?
Certain fermented foods can produce the lethal respiratory toxin known as bongkrekic acid.

The toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Burkholderia gladioli, has no taste or smell, so the family would not have realized how harmful the meal was when they were eating it.

Bongkrekic acid affects the body by going after organs including the liver, kidneys, and brain. It is also heat stable, meaning that cooking won’t destroy it.

After eating the meal, the family had stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.

When infected food is consumed, symptoms appear a few hours later and can be lethal within 24 hours.

“Eating food contaminated with bongkrekic acid can result in poisoning for both humans and animals and even lead to death, with death rates as high as 40 to 100 percent,” according to a China Daily story at the time.
