Jamie Foxx reveals cause of illness in new Netflix special ‘What Had Happened Was…’

Laughter might be the best medicine for Jamie Foxx.

In his Netflix comedy special “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…” released on Tuesday, the multihyphenate artist, who caused a stir in April after being admitted to the hospital due to an unexplained illness, talked candidly about his health struggles.

“If I can stay funny, I can stay alive,” Foxx, 56, joked during the one-hour program.

The Golden Globe-nominated comedian also thanked his fans for their support during his recuperation on the comedy show, which is based on a string of one-man shows Foxx did in October.

Foxx, who was hospitalized in the Georgia city, addressed the Atlanta crowd, “You have no idea how good this feels,” with obvious passion. “I was fightin’ for my life, but I’m here in front of you.”

In 2024, “What Had Happened Was” will be Foxx’s first significant solo release. In January, the Luther Vandross documentary “Luther: Never Too Much,” which he co-produced and starred in, debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. In May, he also starred in the comedy “Not Another Church Movie,” which was directed by Johnny Mack.

Foxx, along with comedians Adam Sandler, Seth Meyers, Ali Wong, and others, has already been nominated for a Globe for best stand-up comedy special for his energetic performance in the program.

Jamie Foxx, what happened to him?
It was announced on Foxx’s daughter Corinne’s Instagram account in April 2023 that the comedian and actor had experienced a “medical complication,” according to Foxx’s family. At the time, no information on Foxx’s health was made public.

In an Instagram video three months later, Foxx personally updated fans on his health, albeit there were little details about his condition.

At the time, Foxx remarked, “I went through something that I thought I would never ever go through,” “I know a lot of people were waiting, wanting to hear updates, but to be honest with you, I just didn’t want you to see me … with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was going to make it through.”

In a Netflix special, Jamie Foxx discloses the origin of his mysterious sickness.
As stated in his Netflix special, Foxx’s health scare started on April 11, 2023, when he had a “bad headache.” The comic claimed that shortly after requesting an aspirin to relieve his headache, he passed out. Adding, “I don’t remember 20 days,”

Foxx was brought to a doctor during this unconscious phase, who gave him a cortisone injection and sent him home. Still worried about the “Django Unchained” star’s health, Foxx’s younger sister Deidra Dixon drove him to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta for additional testing.

A Piedmont physician told Dixon that Foxx had experienced a stroke as a result of a brain hemorrhage. The stroke’s precise cause has not been identified.

“It is a mystery,” Foxx thought to himself. “The specifics of what occurred to me are still unknown. I just want to let you know that I am grateful for every prayer since I needed them all.

In a Netflix special, Jamie Foxx discloses that he had a stroke and was unable to walk.
According to Foxx, he came out of his stroke-induced coma in May 2023. The rapper of “Blame It” claimed that after it, he was told he was unable to walk and ended up in a wheelchair.

Foxx became incredulous at the loss of mobility. Foxx remembered telling himself, “I don’t get strokes,” with tears in his eyes. This is old man s—. Put an end to this (crap) hoax.

Foxx claimed that despite the seriousness of his illness, he used comedy as a coping mechanism. The comic used snarky charm to make light of the unpleasant aspects of recuperation, such as full-body baths and taxing physical therapy, throughout the special.

“I lost everything, but the only thing I could hold onto was my sense of humor,” stated Foxx. “I didn’t lose my sense of humor, even though I couldn’t probably walk or talk that well. The nurses felt I was seriously going insane since I was continually making jokes.
