Payne was trying to leave the hotel when he passed away, according to the 911 call, police report, and video footage. The hotel knew that he had threatened to use the balcony as a means of escape, but they still left him alone in his room.
Payne detested being confined to hotel rooms and had previously escaped by using a hotel balcony; according to insiders, the singer had done so as recently as mid-September, just before he passed away.
His bodyguard had previously confined the artist in a hotel room while he was renting a house in Florida because he thought he was high. Using a garden hose as a rope, Payne fled the house through the balcony.
Payne was seen getting unruly in the hotel lobby before three staff members physically dragged him back to his room, according to TMZ’s sharing of camera footage from the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires.
Payne is seen straining and refusing to return to his hotel room in video that shows him outside his room with the staff.
The singer was led into his room by the staff personnel using a master key. The police report states that the staff took a mirror out of the hallway outside his room, most likely to prevent him from breaking it.
The singer may have communicated his escape plan because just minutes later, one of the staff members called 911 and expressed concern that he would hurt himself by jumping from the balcony.
“I don’t know whether his life may be in danger,” the 911 call transcript stated. We’re a little scared because he’s in a room with a balcony.
After that, he was abandoned in the hotel room, where he tragically passed away.
He had a bag wrapped around his shoulder when they discovered his body, which he had not worn in the lobby, suggesting that he was attempting to flee.
Near the body, police also discovered a hat. He must have worn the hat in the hotel room because he was not wearing one in the lobby.
The 31-year-old reportedly attempted to jump from the third-story balcony to the second-story balcony, with the intention of jumping to the earth from there.
According to the police report, two days after his death, a hotel employee discovered a bag on the second floor with a note that said “for Liam” and contained a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and many medications, which lends credence to this allegation.
According to the police investigation, this bag belonged to Payne, thus the singer most likely dropped it onto the balcony below and tried to do the same.
The coroner’s report states that Payne was not conscious at the time of his fall.
