Mattel forced to apologise after Wicked doll boxes link to porn site

One of the biggest movies of 2024 is expected to be Wicked. However, the movie’s marketing effort has come under fire after doll boxes containing mementos from the film linked to a pornographic website.

Cynthia Erivo plays the role of Elphaba Thropp, a misunderstood young woman who later transforms into the Wicked Witch of the West that we are all familiar with from The Wizard of Oz, in the film Wicked, which was released to theaters worldwide on November 22.

Ariana Grande plays Glinda Upland, who transforms into Glinda the Good Witch of the North, in the film as well. The movie tracks their unexpected bond as it develops.

With a $145 million (£112 million) budget, it is expected to be a huge hit that will be seen by millions of people worldwide. The cast includes Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Peter Dinklage.

Mattel produced a line of limited edition dolls based on the characters that Grande and Erivo brought to life to go with the film.

However, after unintentionally including a URL to explicit content on the doll packaging featuring movie characters, the crew making the goods is left holding their heads in their hands.

Since September 26th, they have been offered for sale for $39.99 (£31) on websites such as Amazon, Walmart, and Target.

Dedicated fans have been snatching up dolls for Madame Morrible, Fiyero, Nessarose, Elphaba, and the Glinda weeks before the movie’s premiere.

However, a very regrettable website that was linked on the bottom of the dolls’ package has created quite a commotion online.

The website that links to www.wicked.com is actually a pornographic website that offers “cinematic and parody porn movies” and is unrelated to the original film.

Users are required to verify that they are at least eighteen years old in order to access the age-restricted website.

Customers have taken to X (previously Twitter) to laugh at the offensive mistake that was first discovered on a Glinda doll package. The movie’s official URL is www.wickedmovie.com.

Fans examined other merchandise and discovered that Lego had not made the same error with their Wicked products.

Mattel acknowledged the mistake in a statement.

The Mattel Wicked collection dolls, which are mainly sold in the United States, had a typo on their packaging that was supposed to take customers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page, according to a spokeswoman. We sincerely apologize for this regrettable mistake and are acting right now to fix it.

“Parents are cautioned that youngsters should not use the incorrectly printed webpage.

“Those who already own the product are encouraged to throw away the packaging or hide the link. They can also get in touch with Mattel Customer Service for more details.”
