Steph Claire Smith responds to the criticism directed at her family’s poolside video.
When Australian fitness celebrity Steph Claire Smith posted a TikTok video of herself in a bikini while removing her little son’s goggles from a swimming pool, she became the subject of controversy. A discussion about her swimsuit selection was swiftly sparked by the benign video.
Steph, who was thirty years old and expecting her second kid, made the decision to confront the unfavorable comments. She talked candidly on how mothers are expected by society to behave and look a certain way.
Her statement brought to light the pressure women face, particularly after becoming mothers, to adhere to rigid and out-of-date standards.
A video of Steph diving into her family pool to retrieve her three-year-old son Harvey’s goggles after they sank to the bottom was shared on her TikTok page earlier this month. She demonstrated her self-assurance and comfort in her skin by donning a chic black two-piece bikini with a little exposing style.
Online responses to the film, which has received over 1.2 million views, have been conflicting. Some were quick to criticize her choice of attire, while others admired her confidence. Reflecting the differing views, one viewer wrote, “Sorry, what was this video about?”
Steph Claire Smith’s family poolside video has drawn criticism.
The breathtaking view was praised by an admirer who wrote, “10/10 view.”
“Can you rescue more stuff from the pool?” was a humorous suggestion made by another commenter.
“Naur have some self-respect,” said another viewer in a more condemning manner.
An onlooker expressed their opinion by saying, “What a view.”
Her parenting was lauded by another, who said, “You are the best mum.”
In a subsequent interview with News.com.au, Steph addressed the criticism by admitting, “When I watched it back, sure, I noticed my bum was a little on show.”
As she retrieved her son’s goggles from a swimming pool, she uploaded a TikTok video of herself in a bikini.
“But as someone who started out as a lingerie and bikini model, and who has posted her body online for 13 years now, I didn’t really think twice about it nor did I think it would get some of the backlash that it has.”
She clarified that although she opted to disregard offensive statements from men, the comments from people of both genders regarding her attire being “inappropriate around a child” were the ones that most irritated her.
She said, “I ignored the sexualized comments from men, but the comments that made me frustrated were the comments from any gender mentioning that what I was wearing was ‘inappropriate around a child.'”
In her closing remarks, Steph emphasized that “I accept people have the right to their own opinion, but it doesn’t mean that opinions always need to be shared.” She advocated for more productive discussion as opposed to pointless condemnation.
Steph revealed that the way society views her has changed dramatically after she and her husband, Josh Miller, became parents to their son, Harvey.
In a subsequent TikTok video, she spoke candidly and defended the moment she had taken with her son, calling it a “cute” scene by the pool.
“Yes, I’m in a bikini, yes, you can see my butt for a lot of the video because the video was from behind,” she added, further elaborating on her objectives.
The 30-year-old, who is expecting her second kid, responded to criticism that her swimsuit was improper.
Did I know my butt would be on display? “Yes, I did set up the camera, but it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I’m going to set it up on this angle so that my butt is at this perfect angle,’ and like always on.”
In response to the outrage, she said, “I’ve set it up cause I knew I was about to jump in and knew there was likely to be some sort of conversation about his goggles, and I thought it was gonna be cute.”
Steph revealed that the original purpose of her film was to show off a sweet moment she had with her son on a particularly hot day when she felt good about herself and at ease in her bikini.
The influencer criticized the antiquated ideas of “appropriateness,” shedding light on the social constraints women frequently encounter.
She exhorted people to prioritize empowerment over condemnation.
