Richard Gere Sells Connecticut House for $11M After Revealing He’s Leaving the U.S. to Be Closer to In-Laws

After announcing his intention to move to Spain, Richard Gere sold his house in Connecticut for $10.75 million.

According to local publication the New Canaan Advertiser, 75-year-old Sexiest Man Alive, who appeared in PEOPLE’s 1999 Sexiest Man Alive, purchased his home in the town of New Canaan for $10.8 million in 2022, which was $50,000 more than the price he sold it for.

According to the publication, the singer-songwriter duo had already paid $16.5 million for it 17 years prior, and they had also sold it at a substantial loss.

After two years of living there with his wife, Alejandra Silva, Gere allegedly had plans to convert the house into a farm. The 1938 home features several gardens, a pool, six bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, and a guest cottage with three bedrooms. A prior ad with Sothebys stated that the property is 32 acres in size and has “period details” throughout.

But the actor recently talked about his desire to relocate elsewhere.

Gere and Silva had resided in the United States since their 2018 marriage, but in an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, he stated that he wished to spend more time in his wife’s home country of Spain and give her the opportunity to be nearer to her family.

 

“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,” Silva, 41, said to him. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers,”

For him, Silva, and their two children, Alexander, age five, and James, age four, who are relocating with them, Madrid will be a “great adventure,” Gere said. (Gere and his second wife, Carey Lowell, have a 24-year-old son named Homer. Silva and her ex-husband Govind Friedland also have an 11-year-old son named Albert.

“I adore Spain and the way the Spanish people are able to live a happy and joyful life,” Gere remarked.

Gere also stated that he owns a home “in the countryside near New York,” which suggests that he would continue to have a presence in the United States at the time of his VF interview.

 

According to the site, the couple first met in 2014 in Positano, Italy, at the Hotel Treville, a popular spot for celebrities.

Around the time of their 2018 wedding, a person close to the couple told PEOPLE that they were “extraordinarily happy,” adding, “They’re so comfortable with each other, have fun together, and are looking forward to their future together.”

Gere’s 75th birthday was marked by Silva in August 2024 with a charming Instagram post.

“After 11 amazing years together, it still feels like the day we first met,” she wrote in a letter. “I could never have imagined the adventure we’ve taken together, the lovely family we’ve formed, or the memories we’ve made. I’m so happy to have you in my life because you improve it in every aspect.”
