The real reason Ellen DeGeneres quit the US for the UK with wife Portia de Rossi

After accusations of toxic conduct on her now-defunct talk show damaged her career, Ellen DeGeneres left the US for the UK to begin her “retirement” with her wife, Portia de Rossi.

Fans were taken aback when the 66-year-old TV host and the 51-year-old actress were seen touring their new haunt in rural England. There have been rumors that they had listed their Montecito estate for sale in anticipation of the 2024 presidential election.

Insiders, however, claim that the pair had already made plans to leave the US prior to Donald Trump’s election victory.

 

There’s no denying it. Ellen and Portia are retiring, an insider exclusively told DailyMail.com. “Neither of them has any upcoming projects.”

According to the insider, the former talk show heavyweight has had to balance a lot less work since she was accused of creating a hostile work environment on the set of her show.

“Ellen truly believed she had left her mark on the industry, but that was lessened when she was fired for allegedly mistreating her employees,” the person continued. “It was really hurtful to have celebrities criticize her one by one after that.”

Following allegations of toxic behavior on the set of her own daytime talk program, which aired its final episode on May 26, 2022, Ellen’s career took a nosedive.

In her Netflix stand-up special For Your Approval, which debuted in late September, she explored her persona non grata status.

 

In the special, which included content about her activities after quitting her TV program, the comic made a joke about being “kicked out of show business.”

According to a second source, Ellen left the US because of the recent election results and the shift in public perception of her.

“Even before the election, she was looking to move away because of all the animosity toward her,” the person started. And given how events unfolded with Trump’s victory, she is happy to be leaving the United States.

“She has Portia, the only person who still loves her, and she is prepared to leave everyone who, in her opinion, left her hanging out to dry,” the source went on. It’s okay if she views it as her retirement.

A significant portion of the US dislikes her due to her sexual choices, while others were put off by her persona, which some thought was phony following the workplace accusations.

Moving on from her issues is simpler for Ellen than facing them head-on. It appears to be a depressing conclusion to her previous persona.

Ellen and Portia have made their home in The Cotswolds, the A-list capital of Britain, a region in southwest England around 100 miles from London.

Several celebrities also call their new neighborhood home, including Kate Moss, Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Hurley, Stella McCartney, David and Victoria Beckham, who regularly post pictures from their dreamy country lifestyle.

Even royalty calls the region, which was the setting for the bawdy new Disney series Rivals, home, as King Charles owns Gloucestershire’s Highgrove House.

For years, there have been rumors that Hugh Grant had a tiny hideaway nearby.

According to a recent study, there are more stars per acre in the area than anyplace else outside of London. The countryside of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire is home to some 50 superstars.

Since Ellen and Portia had already attempted to escape Los Angeles by relocating to Montecito, which is located in Santa Barbara County and is roughly 75 miles outside the city, the location is well-liked by celebrities who want to escape the bustle of London.

The two were seen going to Jeremy Clarkson’s local bar last week.

Ellen’s decision to forgo her signature blonde hairstyle in favor of a head full of brown tresses seems to have also prompted a makeover.

In the event of a Trump victory, numerous American celebrities have threatened to leave the country, but the majority have not done so.

Although it’s unclear if any of them will really leave the US if Trump wins, celebrities like Sharon Stone, Cher, and Barbra Streisand have all stated that they were thinking about doing so.

America Ferrera is considering moving to the UK, while Eva Longoria has moved to Spain, although she made it clear that she did not move because of Trump.
