In her upcoming memoir, Cher is going back in time.
In “Cher: The Memoir, Part One,” the singer explains why she decided to file for divorce from her second husband, Gregg Allman, after just nine days of marriage, telling readers she took “each day as it came.”
The couple chose to get married “within a few days” of becoming parents in 1975.
Four days after Cher’s divorce from her first husband, Sonny Bono, was formalized, the couple married in Las Vegas in June. The bride remembers, “There was little about our wedding day that was romantic.”No honeymoon would take place.
The next week, after allegedly discovering a “plastic bag full of white powder” in the Allman Brothers Band member’s toiletry bag and learning from friends that he had planned to split from her, the Goddess of Pop filed for divorce.
Following Gregg’s admission to treatment, the couple got back together, but their “belated honeymoon” in Jamaica ended early when Cher allegedly saw her lover drinking.
The singer breaks down their tumultuous romance in “Cher: The Memoir, Part One.”
The vocalist of “Believe,” who later learned that Gregg had a heroin addiction, issued an ultimatum to him.
“I’m just so tired of doing this, Gregory,” I said to him on the phone. She recalls, “I’m so sick of going to rehab with you.” On the other end of the line, he was silent. “But I continue,” he murmured quietly.
Cher goes on, “His response stopped me in my tracks, because it was true.” “Despite his past failures, he continued to attend treatment centers, make an effort to get clean, and keep trying.” I sympathized with him at that moment rather than considering my own fatigue.
When their 48-year-old son Elijah was born in 1976, the couple was still together. He joined Cher’s 55-year-old son Chaz Bono, whom she shared with Sonny.
The Grammy winner describes the incident as “the last straw” and says, “[My breaking] point came soon after Gregory had a paranoid breakdown one night and insisted he saw men with guns in the backyard.”
“It [was] not safe for kids,” she continues. Even though it just occurred once, I couldn’t take the chance.
In January 1979, Cher and Gregg formalized their divorce after splitting up once more.
She blamed Allman’s substance abuse for the relationship breakdown.
The on-again, off-again couple reconciled before ultimately divorcing in 1979.
Cher went to the “I’m No Angel” singer’s funeral after he passed away in 2017 at the age of 69 from liver cancer.
She talks about her ups and downs with Sonny, who she said “seriously thought” about killing her, in other parts of her memoir.
The singer of “Strong Enough,” who is currently seeing music executive Alexander “AE” Edwards, also claimed that Lucille Ball pushed her to break up with her “I Got You Babe” co-star, who passed away in a skiing accident in 1998.
The Grammy winner was previously married to Sonny Bono.
She is now dating Alexander “AE” Edwards.
