In the UK, general practitioners report “a spike in cases.”
The most effective strategies to prevent and manage the spread of a Victorian sickness currently sweeping the United Kingdom have been made public.
People may suddenly notice cuts and pimples on their skin as Britain becomes colder and darker in the run-up to Christmas.
Although some could attribute it to the reduction in temperature, scabies, a disease that was previously common in Victorian England, may be to blame.
In the UK, general practitioners report “a spike in cases.”
GP diagnoses are “above the five-year average and rising, with the north of England seeing a spike in cases,” according to Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of GPs, who spoke to the BBC.
Notably, scabies can exacerbate eczema, but it is not the same condition.
The main distinction is that eczema is not contagious, while scabies is.
Scabies: What is it?
Close skin contact is the primary way that scabies, an itchy rash brought on by mites, is spread.
Despite the fact that scabies “is not usually a serious condition,” the NHS advises that it “should be treated quickly to stop it spreading.”
Professor Hawthorne said, “Scabies can be extremely itchy and irritating, but it’s not a serious condition.”
During Victorian England, scabies was a common occurrence.
If left untreated, it can worsen pre-existing skin diseases or spread, raising a patient’s risk of consequences like secondary skin infections.
“Given the social stigma associated with the condition, we acknowledge that patients may be reluctant to seek treatment; however, it is crucial that they do not disregard their symptoms as this may worsen them and increase the likelihood of spreading the condition to others.”
“The saliva, eggs, and feces of the parasite mite sarcoptes” are the cause of scabies, which is “an incredibly uncomfortable itchy and bumpy rash,” according to Dr. Ross Perry, a general practitioner and medical director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics.
It can take up to eight weeks for scabies rash to show up on the body, and during that time, it can spread alarmingly, especially on clothing, bedding, and towels, he noted.
Any region of the body might become infected with scabies.
