Tribeca Lisbon Draws Robert De Niro’s Attention

By stating that he will approach the new venture with the “same spirit” as his 22-year-old U.S. festival, Robert De Niro has hinted at the start of Tribeca Lisbon. “Twenty-two years ago, in response to the devastation of 9/11, Jane [Rosenthal] and I founded the Tribeca Festival to help revitalize our neighborhood through the power of film, art, and storytelling,” the double Academy Award winner said yesterday at a reception in New York. Today, we still have the same goal. Bringing this similar atmosphere to Lisbon, a city with a rich cultural legacy and a strong demand for the arts and entertainment, is very important to us. De Niro attended the ceremony with Whoopi Goldberg, Francisco Pedro Pinto Balsemão, CEO of Grupo IMPRESA, U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Randi Charno Levine, Tribeca co-founder Rosenthal, and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas. October 17–19 is when the first Tribeca Lisbon will happen.

Attenborough, David Presenting “Asia,” a BBC landmark

Presenting is not nearly over for David Attenborough just yet. Asia, the BBC’s historic natural history series that explores the continent, has taken the 98-year-old on board. The newest series from the BBC Studios Natural History Unit will explore the wildest regions of the continent, including the Gobi Desert, Borneo’s jungles, Siberia’s northern tundra, and the Indian Ocean’s coral seas. Although she hasn’t presented as much in recent years, Attenborough has nevertheless starred in several BBC series and Netflix original series, such as A Life on Our Planet. “We are incredibly thrilled to have Sir David Attenborough present our fantastic new landmark series Asia for BBC One,” stated Sreya Biswas, BBC Head of Commissioning, Natural History. Asia is a fascinating and beautiful continent that is home to some of the world’s most exquisitely varied ecosystems.

At the festival, the UK’s TV Collective launches a content fund.

UNIQUE: Later this month, the UK’s TV Collective will introduce a content fund and accelerator program at its Live Festival, which will include presentations by Big Zuu, Akala, and the creators of Netflix’s Supacell. The two new projects are essential parts of TV Collective’s custom offer to help Global Majority talent, who are still disproportionately affected financially by the decline in TV commissioning. Beginning in October 2024, the BeeSMART fund will make a monthly charitable payout of £25,000 ($32,000); however, the TV Collective’s first content fund will be distributed at the conclusion of the Live Festival, with £5000 going to the fund winner. Additional speakers at the festival include Rajesh Thind of Defiance: Fighting The Far Right and Paul Garnes, president of Ava DuVernay’s Array on Origin and the future of cinema. TV Collective CEO Simone Pennant stated: “Given the current economic challenges, many of us are in survival mode, even with the successes of our Breakthrough leaders program, which has supported over 200 global majority talent at senior levels in TV to advance their careers.” TV Collective, however, intends to keep encouraging our community to flourish rather than merely exist with these new projects.
