“They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway,” Goldberg added, “which is why I’m not telling you who made them.”
Whoopi Goldberg didn’t have the kind of birthday she had hoped for.
The TV star said that the bakery that made her birthday sweets first turned down her request when she was celebrating her 69th birthday on The View on Wednesday.
Following an hour of festivities, during which Goldberg presented her favorite items to the audience, the co-hosts of The View indulged in one of Goldberg’s favorite desserts: Charlotte Russe.
Before admitting that she had trouble ordering the dessert, Goldberg said that her mother loved the trifle-like treat, which consists of layers of fruit, Bavarian cream, and sponge cake, as a child.
The actress said, “Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” as the audience let out a shout.
Goldberg’s confession elicited significant emotions from her co-hosts as well. Sunny Hostin asked, “Oh, really?” while Sara Haines spat out her bite right away.
“They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway,” Goldberg said of the bakery, “which is why I’m not telling you who made them.”
Despite this, the Sister Act actress said to the audience, “It can’t be because I’m a woman, but perhaps they did not like my politics.”
“But that’s alright,” Goldberg went on, “because you discover something? This is my mother’s celebration, listen. Grab these and join my mom and I in celebrating. I appreciate everyone’s efforts to celebrate my birthday today.
Entertainment Weekly identified the Staten Island bakery as Holtermann’s Bakery, but she did not specify which one it was.
The bakery’s owner, Jill Holtermann, told EW that “it was not because of political” associations but rather that “we were having trouble with our boilers.” Holtermann’s has now refuted the allegations.
According to Holtermann, the co-host of The View first requested goodies for her birthday broadcast and a talk show appearance on November 6, but the baker declined because she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through.”
She told the site, “I told Whoopi that I couldn’t do it at this time.” “We have so many things going on with my boiler,’ because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea [if we could] be baking everything.”
The proprietor of the bakery also affirmed Goldberg’s assertion that on the morning of November 13, a woman who neither named came to pick up about fifty Charlotte Russe sweets, which the owner was eventually able to make in spite of the boiler issues.
She also denied to EW that she knew the woman’s identity or that she was connected to either Goldberg or The View.
