Charli xcx Reveals the “Saturday Night Live” Hosting Advice She Received from Ariana Grande — and Didn’t Follow

The “Club Classics” singer discussed the guidance she received from Ariana Grande, who hosted the sketch show in October, in an interview with Variety that was released on Wednesday, December 4.

Regarding her Nov. 16 show, Charli, 32, told the tabloid, “I was getting tips because she’d obviously just done [SNL] and killed it.” “She was just like, ‘You’re gonna be amazing, just relax, it’s so fun.'”
“But outside of her advice about contact lenses — which I ended up not going with on the night — I really heeded [Lorne Michaels’] advice,” she said, “which was just to trust the process, go with the flow and not try and overly control things that would automatically get figured out along the way.”

Before hosting her first Saturday Night Live, Charli xcx disregarded this advise.

The “Club Classics” singer discussed the guidance she received from Ariana Grande, who hosted the sketch show in October, in an interview with Variety that was released on Wednesday, December 4.

Regarding her Nov. 16 show, Charli, 32, told the tabloid, “I was getting tips because she’d obviously just done [SNL] and killed it.” But aside from her advice regarding contact lenses, which I ultimately decided not to wear that night, “I really heeded [Lorne Michaels’] advice, which was just to trust the process, go with the flow, and not try to overly control things that would automatically get figured out along the way,” she added. “She was just like, ‘You’re going to be amazing, just relax, it’s so fun.'”
Charli said, “I listened to that advice because, I mean, how can you not?”

In 2014 and 2022, the Brat hitmaker had two previous appearances on Saturday Night Live. She demonstrated her ability to carry the sketch program with her comedic skills by juggling the roles of host and musical guest for the third time.
She made appearances in sketches including “Babymoon,” which was a sequel to the immensely popular “Bridesmaids” series that Grande, 31, hosted, and a Wicked audition tapes skit in which she played Adele.

Additionally, the vocalist of “Apple” donned a Victoria Beckham costume for a spoof called “It Girl Thanksgiving Special.”

Charli’s performance of “Girl, So Confusing,” which was introduced by Julia Fox, whom she cries out to in “360,” and “Sympathy Is a Knife,” which had Grande on the remix, rounded up her night on Saturday Night Live.

Charli talked about switching to acting in other parts of the Variety interview because she has a number of upcoming movies and a comedy series called Overcompensating on Amazon.

“Everything’s been relatively small, and I’m enjoying learning about being on a set and learning from great directors and actors,” she stated.

“I hate it when musicians dive into a different field, head-first, without really researching or learning much of anything about it,” Charli said. “So I did a lot of reading to educate myself over the past three or four years before I actually did anything.”
