Mom Will Spend 65 Years in Prison After Claiming She Sometimes ‘Forgot’ To Feed 3-Month-Old Baby

An Indiana mother who was found guilty of neglecting her young son, which led to his death, will serve the next 65 years in jail. After her 3-month-old son, Silas Chance-Kent Scott, died in 2022, a judge sentenced 25-year-old Caylin Monroe to more than 60 years in jail. According to his mother, she occasionally neglected to feed the infant, and Silas perished from malnutrition.

When deputies from the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding an unconscious newborn in February 2022, the investigation into Silas’ death got underway, according to 14 News. Unfortunately, an autopsy revealed that the baby’s tummy was empty when he passed away. According to reports, his parents were unable to recall the last time they had fed him.

Silas was born healthy.

When Monroe gave birth to Silas, the infant was little but healthy, according to court records that People was able to obtain. Monroe’s mother told her daughter that she was worried about the baby’s health because he apparently having trouble growing.

According to a People story at the time, a pal reportedly agreed.

According to the affidavit, “Caylin said that her best friend, Grace Hudson, asked why [Silas] was so small.” “Yeah, he is a little small,” Caylin claimed. Caylin said she believed there was a deeper issue with Silas, but she was never able to find the time to call a another pediatrician.

It seems that Silas’s parents struggled to remember to feed him.
According to News 14, Monroe said that because Silas was a calm baby, he occasionally forgot to feed him. Jakob Scott, the baby’s father, reportedly experienced the same issue.

Monroe allegedly had to keep a feeding log for one infant and into afoul of the law because of another child. Monroe acknowledged in court filings that she was afraid of losing her children, which is why she chose not to seek medical attention for Silas.

The father of Silas is also accused of murder.
According to online court documents, Scott was charged by prosecutors with the murder and negligence of a dependent, which led to the death of the dependant. According to People, Scott’s jury trial in November 2024 was postponed, and he will now appear in court on December 2. According to the magazine, Scott acknowledged that they didn’t feed Silas unless he sobbed. Furthermore, neither he nor Monroe could recall the last meal the infant had before passing away.
