After the divisive US presidential election, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi sold their Montecito, California, home and moved to England. The couple moved to the Cotswolds, a popular destination for celebrities in the UK, where they were recently seen having fun with friends.
The move was mostly prompted by the 2024 US presidential election, according to a person “close to the former TV host,” who told The Wrap that Ellen and Portia might never return to the US.
Numerous others shared their thoughts about the news, as evidenced by the Facebook comment, “Bon Voyage!”
“Praise God they are leaving,” someone wrote.
“Oh wow – this honestly IS a good news year for the US!!!!” wrote another.
“My sympathies to the United Kingdom,” a netizen joked.
“Ellen, you could run, but you can’t hide!” one commenter wrote. Everything will come back to haunt you.
“For all of you who think Ellen is a good person.. educate yourself,” said another commenter.
After the divisive US presidential election, the couple sold their house in Montecito, California.
After they started dating in 2004, Ellen and Portia soon rose to prominence as one of Hollywood’s most well-known pairs.
Soon after same-sex marriage became legal in California, in August 2008, they exchanged vows in a private ceremony at their home in Beverly Hills.
In her recently released Netflix special For Your Approval, the 66-year-old media icon previously discussed her decline in popularity and career ending.
They made their home in the UK’s Cotswolds, a popular destination for celebrities, where they were recently seen having fun with friends.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 after 19 seasons, and Ellen addressed accusations that she contributed to workplace toxicity in the stand-up comedy special.
Critics pointed out that the Emmy Award winner’s attempts at accountability frequently avoided responsibility and lacked reflection, despite her humorous and self-deprecating remarks about being “canceled.”
Journalist Abigail Covington wrote for The Daily Beast on September 24 that “her attempt to address the controversy lacks the depth and self-reflection the moment demands, with the parallels she draws between her public fall from grace in 2020 and the homophobic blowback she faced after coming out as a lesbian earlier in her career coming across as particularly out of touch.”

“The final product is a special that seems less like a genuine assessment of her career—failures and all—and more like an effort to regain likeability.”
One of Ellen’s jokes in For Your Approval is, “They kicked me out of show business because I was mean.” In show business, one cannot be cruel. They will expel you.
IMDb gave the comedy special a 5.4/10 rating, while Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 33% rating.
In August 2008, Ellen and Portia married in a private ceremony at their Beverly Hills residence, just after same-sex marriage became legal in California.
“Instead of concluding her career as a comedian with something irreverent or groundbreaking, she chose a stale recounting of the last two years’ headlines,” a critic on IMDb said.
“There’s nothing exceptional and no means to stop your innovative career. Ellen’s dry humor has always been a strength of hers, but I don’t think it worked well here.
